A New Kind of Sundate

8:24:00 PM

I honestly can’t think of a better simple joy in life than spending a whole day with someone as or even crazier than you very near and dear to your heart. With this in mind, I bring you Simple Joy #2, a day with a person you may want to kill on some days love.

Last Sunday, my boyfriend (who from this entry onward will be calling either Bubba/Bubs/Bubster- a nick name I started using ages ago and use more than his actual name) had a day filled with adventure. Because he needed to visit a museum for one of his classes (yes, he’s finishing up his 5th year in college after playing for our school’s basketball team but we are the same age okay I am not older or a “cougar”) he asked me to come along because he needed to me to explain the pieces of art and answer any questions he might have for his paper which I will lovingly help him with loves me and can’t get enough of my company (yes, there’s like that. Bawal kumontra!)

Camwhore by the door pa lang eh!
Day off ang peg lang!
We headed on over to the National museum and camwhored looked all around. There were so many beautiful pieces by famous Filipino artists like Ocampo, Manansala, Hidalgo and so many more. What I loved most about the museum (aside from the free admission- I honestly believe people should donate to our museums more to help them stay open and awesome) was that everything looked so perfect. I never really got a chance to really look at such beautiful pieces up close and to have been able to walk around the huge museum (take note, it’s two buildings- one for the art and one for the artifacts) with someone I love. It really made the experience so much sweeter. From our crazy poses to Bubba’s hilarious candid comments about the exhibits, I couldn’t help but laugh and enjoy every minute spent in the museum.

Here are some more pictures:

"Pa artsy" effect

Anyare?
Pisherman ang peg

After our little adventure (take note, it was our first “Museum Date” ever) we decided to explore the area further. Since we’re more Rockwell/Greenhills/Eastwood and Greenbelt type of people, we never really get to go around the MOA area (aside from the after game meals we had last UAAP season when ADMU would have games at the Arena) so we took our chances and got lost looking for the huge mall.

Peek a boo!
Keeping with the whole “new experiences” theme, we decided to eat in a restaurant we had heard so much about but never really got to try- Yabu. We had to wait a bit but it was definitely worth it! We ordered our own sets of Tonkatsu and had so much fun playing with our food mixing the sauces and crushing the sesame seeds for our meal. Just a little side note: the Bubster and I don’t really order pork. We don’t like it that much (except for bacon. Bacon is not pork. Bacon is heaven. Heavenly goodness wrapped in a little bit of fat and smokey juicyness). Wait, what was I saying again? Man I could go for some juicy bacon right about now. Oh right, wait. Not being much of “pork lovers” the Tonkatsu in Yabu definitely changed our minds. We are now rethinking our love and appreciation for pork (but bacon will forever be my first love).

Career ang pag crush!
Hello from a little piglet!
So full from our delicious late lunch, we decided to walk around the mall for a bit. We went shopping and got lost exploring the huge stores around us (Hey they didn’t call it the “Mall of Asia” for nothing!). Then, the next part of our adventure day happened. I was treated to my reward for being the best and most awesomest girlfriend ever accompanying Bubs to the museum- ICE FREAKING SKATING. Yay!

Since I was little I was so in love with Michelle Kwan. I would watch her on TV with my dad and immediately after her performance I would put on a pair of socks and slide around the room in my big pambahay shirt and cartoon panty care of the Greenhills tiangge pretending to be her complete with stunts (by “stunts” I actually mean I would jump up every once in a while- Yehes! Dare devil!) and a grand bow at the end (my dad would clap after my performances- thank you Dad for keeping my dream alive). So you can just imagine my excitement when I saw the skating rink in which all my little girl dreams would come true.
Doesn't his face just scream with excitement? Haha
My boyfriend (who may not be my boyfriend after I share this story) even told me about the time when he was in the 2nd grade and as a reward for being Top 5 in his class (yehes naman, talino mo idol!) his mom asked him what he wanted and he said what every 2nd grade boy would want- to go ice skating! (I really, truly believe deep down in my heart that he is now my soulmate for all time) So they headed off to Megamall and went “ice skating.” I say “ice skating” with the quotation marks because as per the Bubster, he never let go of the rail. He held on and just hung around the rink while everyone else was skating and enjoying. He still says that despite that, it was once of the best experiences of his life (again, I truly believe he is my soulmate now). And now, here we were, about to get our skate on.
What a poser!
I may have screamed a few colorful words during this moment
I’ll be honest with you- I was confident. I used to roller skate every time my family and I would go up to Baguio when I was little and in college I was hooked on longboarding- I thought I had it in the bag. But boy was I wrong. We put on our skates and headed out on the rink. We decided to hold on to the sides of the rink “just for a bit” as we made our way to the center of the icy floor. There were no rails which super angered my boyfriend since he couldn’t hold on properly concerned my boyfriend for the safety of the other kids (he’s such a sweetheart) and made it even harder for us to hold on. In the end, we spent over an hour in the rink… JUST HOLDING ON TO THE SIDES.
That child behind me kept trying not to laugh
Is this the proper form?
We would try to skate a bit but the moment we would lose even just a little bit of balance, we would immediately hold back on to the sides. It was sad. Oh so very sad. Little children were laughing at us trying to help us but being the brave souls we were, we just couldn’t let go. Although I will give credit to Bubs, he would let go and skate a few feet away (and then immediately hold on to the side again) and I would have a mini heart attack each time. Why you ask? Well, think of it this way:
  1.  He’s 6”4 and was in coral pants. Can you imagine a 6”4 man in CORAL PANTS falling right smack in the middle of an ice skating rink?
  2. He’s very vocal. When he would slip even just a little he’d make a low and loud sound of panic like “ACK!” so I was only anticipating what he would say or how LOUD he would say it if he actually fell.
  3. There were little kids everywhere. Little kids that didn’t even reach his waist. Imagine if he fell on one of them?! And in his coral pants?!
  4. He’s playing for a semi-professional basketball team that’s #1 in the standings so far. Imagine if he fell and injured himself? Can you imagine what I would have to say to his coaches?! “I’m sorry Nico is injured- we went ice skating and well, he slipped and fell.” BANG! You are now cordially invited to Karla Aguas’ funeral. It is a closed casket funeral because Karla has been shot in the head for taking her boyfriend out ice skating.
  5. He was in coral pants. Coral pants.
Watcha doin' baby? The robot?
Curse you Michelle Kwan!
And so ends our adventure day. I know this was a rather long entry but I really had to share this experience with all of you. I get tweets, emails and messages on my Tumblr (ako na ang popular okay. Ako na!) about how my boyfriend and I “keep the spark alive” in our relationship (we’re going on 2 years this February. Hooray! Champagne for everyone!) and the answer is very simple- we keep ourselves open to new adventures and experiences, together. We spice things up by making it a point to try something new TOGETHER. From a new restaurant to a theme park, a road trip to a “get lost” day, we make sure to make new memories as a couple. You see, this is one of life’s simplest and most awesome joys- spending a day with someone you love.

It doesn’t even have to be a boyfriend or a girlfriend- it can be your best friend, your mom or dad, sister or brother, office mate, ka-chat sa YM (yihee uyyy ASL? Haha) just as long as you enjoy the day together.

I hope you enjoyed this entry and I hope it makes you think about spending a day with someone special. Try going ice skating or visit a museum like what we did. I promise you that as long as you can make new memories together, your relationship will never be boring. J

  2. That must have been really fun! went to the museum last sem break with a certain special someone too, and I'm surprised you were able to look around both buildings... but then, certain special someone can be nerdy at times (always, actually, haha), so imagine what a field day he had then :))

Oh and Ice Skating! As friendly to figure skaters it is to not have rails to hold on to, it really isnt good for a public rink. haha. And their rentals arent good either. :( I cannot ever let go of the figure skates I have (I stopped skating when the megamall rink closed, because MOA's simply too far) because I can never imagine ever going back to those rentals ever again. :)) Never the less, I'm glad you both had fun! =)

    Awesome new blog, Karla! :)

And I love reading stories about couples who are managing to keep the spark alive as time passes by. They are very rare nowadays. I admire you and Nico talaga when it comes to that. :)
